Cherokee Valley Course and Club
About
Surrounded by rolling hills, Cherokee Valley Golf Club has a beautiful setting and temperate climate that draws visitors from all over the state. It feels peacefully tucked away but the course is only minutes from downtown Greenville's attractions. The challenging layout features eleven lakes and more than 50 strategically placed bunkers. The dramatic elevation changes provide even more challenges. It is seemingly a very intimidating golf course but the wide fairways and clean rough make it much more forgiving than it looks. The fifth hole is the golf course's signature. There is a beautiful cascading waterfall on this hole as well as a stunning view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Cherokee Valley G.C. is known almost as much for its practice facility as it is for the golf course. The popular, state-of-the-art facility includes a triple-tiered driving range, two putting greens, and a chipping green.

Interesting and Pretty Course
Cherokee Valley includes views of the mountains and is enjoyable to play. The course is interesting and moderately difficult. The course is kept in good repair. We hit an afternoon where the course was nearly deserted, so the play was pleasant. I like this course.
Fun track
Fun track, nice staff, good rate.
Fun course
Fun track. Friendly staff. Good rate.
Not a course for beginner golfers. Just take pictures
We played at a nice pace until hole #6 a 5 par hole that has undulations. We did not see anyone ahead on previous holes and could not believe they were still off the green when we arrived at our tee shots. They were a 3-some we were a 2-some. We sat quite a while waiting for them to clear the green. Since one of them was quite old, we figured it would take him a while to get to the next tee box. We both birdied that 5 par and could not believe they did not wait a minute for us to tee off and they could have hit their second shot before we arrived at our tee shot since all 3 took 3-4 shots before we felt they were clear for us to hit our first shot. The wait made me stiff and I hit a shot tee shot just past the lake, so I could see they were on the green and I could not reach the green so I hit a nice shot 50 yards from the front of the green. As I came up to my ball the lade marched back to me and said you hit into us. I said how do you figure, I'm 50 yards from the green and you were on the green. She said my father is 85 years old and he cannot play fast. I said who was rushing you? Why didn't you just visit with your father at the tee box and allow us to play though? She said we are members here and a 3 some does not have to allow a 2 some to play through. I said if you were polite you would have patiently visited with your father and husband and not be rushed with your second shots. She said well your not playing though and that's that. I called the club house and asked them if it was true of this course, the more players in a group does not have to allow singles or doubles like in our case to play through? He said he knew who I was referring to and said they were only playing 9 holes, so we can be clear of them on the back nine. I recommended they send out a notice that faster players should always be allowed to play through especially if they hit poor tee shots that require a little time looking for their ball.
Fast Greens
What a course. Mountain golf at it's finest. Scenic beauty and great playing conditions in one package.
Ask a local
Cherokee is an interesting public track. There are alot of blind shots that increase the difficulty and with the slanted fairways and raised fairways makes this a difficult course for the mid-level golfer who has not seen it previously. I should have written down all the advice given by the course staff as they had alot of pointers before the round. I should have listened. The tee boxes were in good condition and the fairways were in good shape. Greens require you to read them, every whole. You have to have and use your brain to play Cherokee and score well.
Enjoyable course with great views of the mountains
I played early on a Saturday morning and was allowed to tee off by myself. As there was no one on the course in front of me I was able to play at my own pace and enjoy the scenery along the way. The layout is enjoyable with some fun doglegs and a few holes of interesting length (there are a handful of drivable par 4's for long hitters). Along the way you get a great look at the cliffs above the valley and mountains in the distance. Would definitely play again if I am ever in the area.
Overall decent course.
Course layout was ok. The greens weren't in the best shape. Greens were spotty and bumpy-didn't roll very true.
Great Course for the Money
Course was in very good shape.
If you want an extreme challenge, this is the course. The greens were very hard, fast, rolling, and elevated. Must have a good short game to score on this course.
I don't have that, but enjoyed playing non the less.
Hi "dvacca001" We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your round with us. You definitely need your A game when it come to your short game before playing this course. Please come back on your next visit and enjoy another great round with us! Thanks
Good layout, a couple weeks away
Some patches of rough and fairways still dormant, and a good amount of Poa on the greens. Other than that, in great shape for late April. Greens were lightning quick, and you did not want to be putting downhill.
Very much a shot makers course as there are places you do not want to be.
Holes #5 and 15 are gorgeous, although the waterfall on 5 wasn't flowing
Hi "jdbelko" Thank you for the great review! We are so glad to hear that the greens were in tip top shape on this particular day. Don't forget to mark us down on your calendar on your next visit from Chicago.
Beautiful rolling hills and mountain views
Pete Dye has alcreative designs protecting the greens with sand and grassy bunkers. A true gem at a great location. The greens were extremely fast
On the day we played. As the warm weather days increase they mostly likely will be slower than it was on Monday and more manageable.
Hi "u000004905526" Thank you so much for your honest review. We appreciate the kind remarks regarding our greens. Please come back and visit us again soon. Thanks
GREAT COURSE, ALWAYS TOUGH
PLAY IT ONCE OR TWICE A YEAR, ALWAYS FORGET JUST HOW TOUGH IT CAN BE. LOCAL KNOWLEDGE WOULD BE A GREAT HELP, SOME BLIND SHOTS THAT ARE DEATH IN THE WRONG SPOT.
Hi "jorjaboy" Thank you so much for the excellent review! We are so glad that you enjoyed the course and your round today. Please come back and visit us again soon.
Course goin downhill
We had a foursome to play. Tee off at 11:30. No starter no ranger no pro. Everyone confused except members that was playing. Took 3:05 to play front. Ridiculous. Total chaos on first tee. Course goin downhill fast. Will not return. What use to be good place to go is nothing more than a 20.00 municipal course now.
Hi "mark1army" we apologize about your recent experience on the course. We assure you that we are making the necessary changes to communicate more with our guests and members. We hope that you will give us another try in the near future.
Slow Course
There were a lot of people playing and we had to wait at each hole for 5 or more minutes before the golfers in front moved on.
Hi "u847507957" We appreciate your patience and apologize for your slow round today. We hope to see you back out on the course on a less busier day.
Slow Winter Day
I wouldn't recommend this course when the days are shorter. It always plays slow due to blind shots and several drivable greens but this is a real problem on weekends in the winter. After 5.5 hours we were only through 16 holes and gave up shortly before dark.
Hi "edwingood" Thank you for your honest review! With the surrounding mountains and winter daylight at our backs it is hard to get a full 18 holes in especially with an afternoon tee time. We appreciate your patience and hope to see you back out on the course come spring.
One Dry Day in a Soggy December
Fourth or Fifth time out at Cherokee, always a good value, but one of those courses that is easier the third or fourth time you play due to the number of blind shots and the elevation changes tee to green. Was worried about the condition after weeks of rain, but other than a few soggy patches, the course is well-drained and the greens were in good shape. Many of the bunkers had standing water. Still an entertaining round, great views and change of pace from the courses nearer Greenville.
Hi "u000004644396" Thank you so much for the great review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed the course and the fantastic views. The course has drained exceptionally well after the large amounts of rain that we have endured this month. Cant wait to see you back out on the course in the near future. MGT
Need a ranger!
We were a twosome being held up by the group in front of us. We skipped a hole to go around them, only to find out things were stacked up ahead of that too. We waited on every hole for the group before us to even tee off. For the calliber of the course, they should have a ranger to make sure everyone keeps pace of play.
Hi "u000007923622" Thank you for your review. The course was completely filled up on this particular Friday, but we appreciate your patience. We will definitely look into your advice about setting up a Marshal. Thanks MGT
Views for Days
This course is one of beauty miles of undulating hills and views of the blue ridge mountains. Including one of the most spectacular par threes you will see, where you hit down to a green that is 40 yds below you. The greens roll true and are challenging. The only downfall for me were holes 2-4. 2 is a par five that is 550 yds straight up hill which seems totally unnecessary. 3 is a par 3 that gives you thick rough to the left and right and no ability to fade due to overhanging trees in the left. 4 is a terribly designed par 4 that's a dog leg right. It's a steeply sloped downhill fairway that will inevitably put you into thick rough unless you can backspin a 3 wood. Then green is so soft that the ball makes a splat sound when the ball lands.
Overall this course gets 4 stars the majority of the holes are great and there are opportunities to score.
Hdcp: 7
Round Score: 76
Thank you for the awesome review! The downhills par 3 is one of our favorites too and shooting a 76 is fantastic! We hope to see you back again soon!
Looking for a challenge with elevation
Course in good shape and loved the elevation changes.
Thank you for the review! We're glad you enjoyed the elevation changes and we hope to have you back again soon!
