Worth the money
Course was in good condition. Cart paths are in serious need of repair. Course has some challenges but fun to play.
Great course, beautiful day
Overall the course was in great shape considering the time of year (late fall). Only complaint would be the condition of the cart paths. Very rough shape. ,
Nice track but tough
This was a good value for the money. I did not like the fact that swing u GPS did not know this course
This is not an easy course. I would play it again
Good course
Good fairways and greens but the cart path does need some work.
Good corse
Golf was in good condition seval tee boxes for all level of golfers. Friendly staff . Pace of play was average.
cart paths could definitely use some serious work. Course layout map would be nice and the ability to pull up course on GPS would be nice . Additional yard markers needed as well.
Pleasant surprise
We had not played this course since it closed a few years ago. We were delighted that the course had been restored nicely. The greens in particular were amazing. We will be back for sure.
After a dozen years dormant, a fun, countrified muni reawakens
Golf’s recent popularity surge has reversed the fortunes of many courses, and at the reopened Wellman Golf Club, that means a brand-new-feeling, affordable option within reach of Myrtle Beach.
After a 12-year closure, the summer of 2023 saw golf return to Johnsonville, S.C., thanks to Florence County, the City of Johnsonville and the golf course architect team of Rees Jones and Bryce Swanson. Using Ellis Maples’ original routing, they turned Wellman into a stately, enjoyable South Carolina take on parkland golf. The routing is walkable and the holes move through broad, pine-lined corridors that enjoy some gentle, broad elevation changes.
Thankfully, Jones has left behind his 1990s penchant for copious mounding and excessive bunkering; Wellman lays on the land better than most other courses under his name, with thoughtfully contoured greens that will keep regulars’ interest as they see a variety of hole locations over time. The risk-reward par-5 11th, which swings around a lake, is a stunner, as is the long par-3 18th, which plays across a corner of that same lake to the foot of the humble, cozy clubhouse.
Wellman will reward Myrtle Beach-bound golfers who are willing to travel a little out of the way to play a, well-maintained sub-$50 course with a down-home local feel.
Incredibale value
Just reopen in june, green were perfect, fairway and teebox ok, pace off play 3h15 and friendly starter let us start on 10th tee. Golf now special 13$ 👌 made it a must
Card path
Card paths were in very bad condition. Course and greens in great shape. Greens had a lot of character.
Long course!
Cart path only bc of rain made for a long day...but worth it!
Good shape
The course is in good shape and they're making improvements. The greens are pretty quick.
Some fairways sections were under repair
Some fairways very narrow
Some of par four holes were very long
Over all course was enjoyable to play
Great challenge!
This course is well worth your time and money to play!! Over 7200 from the back tees and will challenge you on so many levels! Glad to see that reopened this course after being closed for over 13 years! I live over 3 hours away but would definitely make a day trip to come back and play this course!!
Great course
Golf Now specials are a must. Good pace…. Good staff….. course is in good condition. Excellent maintenance staff…. Still need to rope off some areas to prevent some golfers from driving thru damp areas and messing up their course. Greens in good- great shape.
Good golf
Course is not back to 100% yet but well on its way.
Little spotty in fairways but greens are fine.
2nd review
2nd review. Course continues to get better even with a large amount of play. Yardage markers have been added. Greens have been able to be cut a bit shorter and are rolling extremely well.
Best greens in the area by far. Grass continues to grow into some of the bare spots. Tees, fairways, traps, and greens are in excellent condition. Players are using their cart sand to fill in divots and are fixing their pitch marks on greens. This is the best true championship golf course and test of skill in a large mile radius, and is priced at a fantastic bang for your buck. Pace of play continues to be great on weekdays and good on weekends. Go play and see for yourself!
Lots of potential
Interesting layout with some challenging holes. Greens are pretty good. Fairways and tees need some work. Rough varies from 2" lush grass to cow pasture to bare dirt. Several tee shots are blind with no signs or even a course map on the scorecard, so I aimed for the wrong fairway a couple times. Lots of woods and water and gnats were hungry, so bring bug spray. Yardage markers in fairway were hard to see. Could not tell how far back the hole was on the green on many approaches. Staff was awesome, as were the other golfers.
2nd Time playing this course
The overall condition of the course was very nice. The greens are big and wide as I mentioned bf on previous review. They are also very slow as they are looking to keep them plush and green looking. I am writing this second review bc of the cost of this course. While this course is nice it is not a $50-$60 dollar during the week course IMO. There are other courses within 40 miles of this course on both sides that are cheaper and just as nice. It is my opinion if this course hopes to survive after the newness wears off it will adjust its pricing accordingly.
I would refer the managers of this course to several local courses . Who offer more competitive rates and have no increases for those people they consider not to be local. Although nonlocal rating is done often in the MB area. This is not MB where tourists abound.
Also would ask management to remember the SCJGA for reduced rates for the kids or the use of YOC ( youth on course). This makes it more desirable for fathers and mothers to bring their kids and doesn't break the bank.
