GEORGETOWN, S.C. -- It's unlikely that growing rice in South Carolina will make a comeback. But a golf course built on a former rice plantation can be revived.
Wedgefield Plantation Golf Club, a Georgetown course steeped in tradition, is trying to do just that.
Just over a bridge from the south end of the Grand Strand, the par-71 course opened in 1972 and has endured some rough times. But a new management group took over Wedgefield in 2010 and is making gains in restoring the course to its former glory. Golf Digest once listed it among the 15 best golf courses in South Carolina. As Wedgefield's Web site said, it's "an old course becoming new again."
Its many attributes include a 100-year-old manor house, massive live oaks, an interesting combination of golf challenges and smooth greens. The basics await with the promise of more to come.
