to host Palmer Cup

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (July 7, 2003) -- This week, 16 of the world's top amateur golfers will test their skills at The Kiawah Island Club's Cassique course in the 2003 Palmer Cup presented by Monster. The Palmer Cup, an annual Ryder Cup-style event that pits eight elite college golfers from the United States against their counterparts from Europe, will be contested from July 10-11.

Members of this year's U.S. squad include: Dustin Bray, University of North Carolina; Bill Haas, Wake Forest University; Jason Hartwick, University of Texas; Chris Nallen, University of Arizona; Ryan Moore, UNLV; Adam Rubinson, Texas Christian University; Brandt Snedeker, Vanderbilt University; Peter Tomasulo, University of California at Berkeley; Coach Bruce Heppler, Georgia Tech.

The European team will consist of: Alejandro Canizares (Spain), Arizona State University; Gonzalo Castano (Spain), San Pablo, CEU University; David Inglis (United Kingdom), Tulsa University; David Price (United Kingdom), University of Glamorgan; Par Nilsson (Sweden), Oklahoma State University; Wilhelm Schauman (Sweden), University of Minnesota; David Skinns (England), University of Tennessee; Oliver Wilson (England), Augusta State University; Coach Keith Williams, English Golf Union; Coach Peter Mattson, Swedish Golf Union.

Attendance to the Palmer Cup is open to the public and free of charge. The schedule for the event is as follows:

Wednesday, July 9 (10:30 a.m.), Opening ceremonies and flag-raising at Cassique clubhouse (closed to general public).

Thursday, July 10 (8 a.m.), Four-ball matches (1 p.m.), Singles matches.

Friday, July 11 (8 a.m.), Foursomes matches (1 p.m.), Singles matches, Closing ceremonies following play.

Named in honor of legendary golfer Arnold Palmer, the Palmer Cup alternates each year between the U.S. and Europe. (Note: This marks the first year players from throughout Europe have been invited to participate. Previously, the event was limited to players from Great Britain and Ireland.)

In 2002, the Palmer Cup was held at Doonbeg Golf Club in County Clare, Ireland, and coincided with the club's grand opening. The U.S. team defeated the Great Britain and Ireland squad by a final score of 15-1/2 to 8-1/2; however, 15 of the 24 matches were not decided until Doonbeg's 18th hole. Overall, the U.S. team leads the Palmer Cup Series, 4-1-1, and has won all three matches in the United States.
