Rising real estate prices can't keep Myrtle Beach's newest course from being built. Pawleys Island Golf Club will be the "worst" of the courses in the area, but the old Sea Gull Golf Course will be the first new course built in five years. "Some people say we're nuts," said Rowland Thomas, one of the owners of Classic Golf Group. "We think it's a great opportunity to provide a much nicer facility and be a lot more competitive area and get more of our market share of the business."

Calabash Golf Links is joining an ever-growing list of Grand Strand courses to close, making way for rampant development. With land becoming more valuable than some golf businesses, some courses are selling out and others are struggling. The Grand Strand has lost four courses recently and three others are pending, while 12 have filed for bankruptcy. "They're building so many homes around here you aren't going to be able to move," a Calabash golf shop employee said.

Two of Myrtle Beach's top golf courses are closing for much of the summer, hoping to spruce up their layouts with new grass and other renovations. Long Bay Club, which closed June 5, is scheduled to re-open in August or September. The new grass will replace the Tifdwarf Bermuda the course has had since its opening. Caledonia Golf and Fish Club, meanwhile, is scheduled to be closed June 16-Aug. 16 while it installs Champions Bermuda grass.

They have about 2,000 homes planned for the new 1,300-acre Preserve at Greyson project in Charlotte, N.C. But, only a handful will be on Tommy Fazio's golf course. The Greyson developers announced recently that Fazio, the nephew of well-known golf course architect Tom Fazio and son of George, another well-known Fazio designer, is the designer of one of their two planned courses. Davis Love III is designing the other.

The Cliffs, a group of four master-planned communities near the Blue Ridge Mountains in South and North Carolina has signed a deal with Tom Fazio to design an 18-hole course, to add to the existing five courses. It will have generously shaped fairways and greens with spacious landing areas, Fazio said. "We plan to incorporate a lot of groomed turf, less rough and more aesthetically placed bunkers at Keowee Springs to promote a friendlier, more forgiving course."

From the bustling Grand Strand to the scenic Lowcountry, the people who live, work and play on the South Carolina Coast have breathed a collective sigh of relief after avoiding the brunt of one of the worst hurricane seasons in recent memory. While Florida has endured four major hurricanes over the past six weeks, the Carolina coast has been left largely unblemished. The Ocean Course of Kiawah Island, S.C., the site of a dramatic Ryder Cup Matches in 1991, has been selected to host the 68th Senior PGA Championship, May 24-27, 2007. The 7,296-yard Pete Dye-designed Ocean Course opened in 1991, and quickly earned a niche among Golf Digest's list of "America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses" and GOLF Magazine's "Top 100 Courses in the United States." The site of the 1997 and 2003 World Cup of Golf, The Ocean Course also will host the 2005 PGA Club Professional Championship.

Phil Mickelson, who captured the Masters in dramatic fashion and jumped into the hearts of millions last Sunday, has officially committed to play the Wachovia Championship and make his first visit to Quail Hollow Club. Mickelson became only the fourth player in Masters Tournament history to win the title with a putt on the final hole and earned his first major championship. The victory capped a nine-tournament stretch in which the 33-year-old has two victories, a pair of third-place finishes and eight top-tens.

When it comes to promoting Charlotte as a golf destination, Mayor Pat McCrory hit it right in the sweet spot when saying the city was "doing a little bit of it now." He couldn't have been more right. Charlotte and Mecklenburg County do next to nothing to promote the Metrolina region as a golf destination.

An investment group headed by Arnold Palmer has announced that it has signed a letter of intent to acquire the assets of the Mid South Golf Course, a layout that Palmer's course design company created in the early 1990s. "I've had a keen interest in Pinehurst ever since my father used to take me there to play," Palmer said. "Given the strong golf traditions of the area, and Mid South's wonderful location and high quality, I'm very excited about the opportunity to have my own personal connection to Pinehurst.

Golfers eager to test their skills over the newest Davis Love III design won't have to wait much longer. Construction of the new Patriot Club at Grand Harbor is complete, all of the turf areas are planted and the course is "growing in," according to Golf Course Superintendent Billy Ford. The Patriot Club is a par-72 layout that is just one of many recreational amenities at Grand Harbor, a private residential community offering more than 2.5 miles of shoreline along the 11,000-acre Lake Greenwood.

Officials at National Golf Club broke ground late last week on an exciting new venture that's a first of its kind in the Sandhills. The project, known as The Cottages at National, is a private residence club allowing people to purchase partial ownership in a two-bedroom or four-bedroom residence overlooking the fifth green.

The fall brings clear skies, changing leaves and lower humidity throughout the North Carolina Piedmont. It also used to mean overseeding and aerification at many courses from Charlotte to Raleigh. But a number of high-end daily fee Metrolina courses, like the Stonebridge Golf Club in Mineral Springs and Birkdale Golf Club in Huntersville, are opting for green aerification only while allowing Bermuda fairways, tee boxes and rough to go dormant. Other courses, like the Ballantyne Resort course in south Charlotte, overseed tee boxes only.
