WEST END, NC On April 4, 2001 the CGA in conjunction with the Carolinas PGA Section will conduct the 7th Tar Heel Cup Matches at Tobacco Road GC in Sanford. This event pits an eight-man team of club pros against an equal number of amateurs in four ball and singles matches with 36 points up for grabs.
The first team to capture 18.5 points wins. The teams are comprised of amateurs and professionals from North Carolina.
This marks the second consecutive year that the incomparable Tobacco Road has hosted this event. And considering the remarkable competition which occurred a year ago, its easy to see why the matches have returned
Heading into the 2000 Tar Heel Cup, the professionals appeared in total command of the series due to four consecutive wins in the annual competition. In fact, the professionals 31.5 to 4.5 win in 99 at Forest Oaks CC in Greensboro was the most lopsided in the brief history of the series.
But 2000 was a different story as the amateurs erased an early deficit and won by the narrowest margin ever, 19 to 17.
The 2001 Tar Heel Cup competition marks the second CGA major championship held at Tobacco Road GC which opened in 1998.
