2001 Can-Am Days Team Cup Matches
(MARCH 15, 2001) - Eight junior golfers from the province of Ontario, Canada will take on the top eight-ranked South Carolina junior golfers, in the third annual Can-Am Days Team Cup Matches sponsored by the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation. The tournament will take place at Bay Tree Golf Plantation in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on March 17-18.
Last year's matches, also held at Bay Tree, saw South Carolina defeat Canada 24 to 12. Jay Haas Player-of-the-Year, senior Emmett Turner will headline this year's South Carolina team. Other seniors joining Turner on the squad will be Brian Duncan, Alex Hamilton, Stephen Poole and Wil Hutchens. All five have signed to play collegiate golf this fall. Rounding out the team are juniors Matthew Bennett and Kevin Kisner and sophomore Zach Siefert.
The Canadian team consists of the best players from Ontario. The key members of their team are: Brent Marsh of Orellia -- the top ranked player from the province; Junior Champion, J.C. Deacon of Unionville; and Kevin Blue of Toronto -- he has signed to play for Stanford this fall.
The Canadians will be in North Myrtle Beach the whole week prior to the matches. They will be trying to work out the cobwebs from the winter layoff.
The event is contested similarly to the Ryder Cup. Each match is worth three points: one on the front, one on the back and one overall. The team with the most points for the two days wins. Saturday's matches will be conducted using a four-ball format. Individual matches will contest the final round.
Matches will start each day at 9:00 A.M. Spectators are welcome. For more information check out our web site at www.scjga.org.
