Carolinas Four-Ball Championship Results
CAMDEN, S.C. (MAY 6, 2001) - Bert Atkinson of Charleston, SC and Sammy Truett of Surfside Beach, SC defeated John Fitch and Johnny Elam of Charlotte to win the 50th Carolinas Four-Ball Championship at Camden Country Club. They won the match two up with one hole to play in the scheduled 18-hole match.
The Atkinson-Truett team took an early 1-up lead with a four-foot birdie on the first hole. The teams then halved holes 2 through 4 before Atkinson's par at the tricky par-4 fifth gave the Atkinson-Truett team a two-up lead. Fitch birdied the par-4 seventh to gain a hole back which put Fitch-Elam one down after nine holes.
On the back nine, Truett converted a birdie on 11 and a made a crucial 10 foot par-saving putt on 16 to retain the two-up lead. Atkinson-Truett halved the 17th hole with a par to win the match.
"After all the years of playing in this event, it feels good to finally win one", said Atkinson. "It's been a long wait."
