MOCKSVILLE, N.C. (MAY 1, 2001) -- Reigning Eastern PGA Club Professional Champion Jeff Lankford, of Mocksville, N.C., used a strong opening round to propel him to a tie for 29th in last week's Greater Greensboro (N.C.) Chrysler Classic at Forest Oaks Country Club. It was his highest finish in 27 PGA Tour events dating back to 1987. Lankford opened with a 5-under-par 67 and finished with rounds of 73, 69 and 72 for a 7-under-par 281, good for $21,775.
Lankford, 37, will compete in The 2001 PGA Club Professional Championship, June 21-24, at Crosswater Club at Sunriver (Ore.) Resort. The national CPC will feature 156 PGA Professionals competing for a $300,000 total purse.
Lankford, a teaching professional at Hickory Hill Country Club in Mocksville, won The 2000 Eastern CPC last fall at Osprey Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.

Lankford's finish last week was his highest individual payday as a professional. He won $20,000 in The 2000 Eastern CPC. His previous best finish in a Tour event came in the 1988 Deposit Guaranty Classic, when he tied for 42nd place.
