The 18-hole Sanctuary Golf Club At Cat Island (previously known as South Carolina National Golf Club) in Beaufort, S.C. is a semi-private golf course that opened in 1985. Designed by George Cobb, Sanctuary measures 6,673 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 136 and a 72.6 USGA rating. The course features four sets of tees for different skill levels.
Sanctuary Golf Club may be the Lowcountry's best conditioned golf course. With velvet tiff-dwarf greens, this George Cobb creation sports beautiful views of Port Royal Sound from many holes.
The course is located on a 400+ acre barrier island just a short 45-minute drive from Hilton Head Island. The layout takes full advantage of the wooded interior with centuries-old live oak trees in abundance.

Worth The Drive
Played this course last year while staying in Hilton Head, and we were impressed with the wildlife and setting. There are a few holes with hazards off the tee that can't be seen, so it might be a good idea to talk to the starter before setting out. Greens were in excellent shape but the fairways were a bit thin. Overall it was in good shape for Jan.
excellent course
this is always a nice course to play. Some really challenging holes.
Great Value, interesting holes
The grens were fast, the first hole was a real test and the last hole keeps you coming back.
Loved it - can't wait to play it again!
Very nice course
Excellent value, especially when booking through GolfNow. Beautiful course.
beautiful
the setting of this golf course is beautiful. There is a nice mix of holes and some are along the water and marsh.Although a little out of the way it is well worth the trip.
An interesting layout with fast greens.
I enjoyed the course. It's not over seeded, so it isn't at it's prettiest right now, but the greens are good and quick. I particularly like the finishing holes, two of which are very picturesque. Definitely worth playing, even though we were stuck behind a fivesome which made the round slower than necessary. And therefore frustrating. However, I suppose you can run into members without etiquette anywhere.
Challenging course
tight and challenging with beautiful scenery, birds alligators, marsh, ponds, channels, deep traps, really challenged my game
A great day of golf and excellent value.
The course is like a leisurely play in a game preserve!
The greens ran well and for this time of year were exceptionally smooth and consistent. I have been playing it for about 7 years and the greens are receiving the ball softly as well as ever.
I like the layout which can be played from 5600 to 6700 yards and be challenging at all lengths. We played with few other people around and in a way that is a shame because the course is deserving of more golfers.
I strongly recommend Sancctuary..
Good course. Average condition
Late November; cold windy day. Dormant fairways were dry. Greens were good, not great. Lots of short doglegs. Will play again in better time of year.
Best views in the state. If you play from the tips, bring your A game.
This is one of the most scenic courses you'll ever play. Can't say enough good stuff about the staff It is a relaxed club where everyone smiles and are clearly happy to be there. Course conditions could be a little better, but for the money and scenery, it's a must play. Lots of Love for the ladies.
Needs starter at tee box
Value was good and course was fun.
With no starter we got stuck behind Two groups of Five players. That wouldn't my wife and i by.Guess no golf ethic, made for a slow time.
Sanctuary Golf
For the $ we paid, it's a fine course. First 3 holes are a little quirky, but after that it's fine. Conditions are average, with the greens being very fast right now. I'll play it again!
Challenging and beautiful
What a great course! The greens are incredible. The views are outstanding. I enjoyed playing this course and I come back often!
Scenic, interesting course
Water is in play on the first seven holes and then six more on the back. Several forced carries over ponds and marshes. Very scenic course with lovely back to back par 3's on holes 4 and 5. The fairways were a little scraggly, but the greens were in beautiful shape. A pleasure to play with a good mix of long and short holes and three super par 3's.
Very nice course
Played two days. Tee boxes, fairways and greens all great shape. Challenging course with several traps and water. Water coolers at several holes as well as restrooms. Nice clubhouse.
fun course to play
course was in very good shape.....greens were excellent and very fast..course could use a starter and a marshall...group in front of us was very slow.....
A must play if you like wildlife and a challenging but playable, nicely maintaind course at a great value thru Golfnow.com
The course is challenging but playable. Plenty of wildlife, nice water views. it was more than just a round of golf. I highly recommned the course and thru Golfnow.com there is no better value in he area.A must play.
Great Course
I played from the whites and found it to be a challenging course, beautiful layout, and a great value for the money. I played on a Sunday and it was not crowded at all.
Reasonable value but could use some tlc
Maintenance seems to have stopped at the edge of the greens - which are in excellent condition. Elsewhere, the course was not in very good shape. It's a very interesting layout and a good challenge with hazards affecting play on most holes.
