I played on September 1, the same day as Robert, the other reviewer, did. I make it a point have ACCURATE reviews. Reviews like his make me mad as his was totally inaccurate, saying the greens were "poor at best" and the whole course is "run down." Not only were the greens not "poor at best," they were in decent-to-good shape. There were patches of crabgrass occasionally, but 99% of the greens, except for one or two, were nothing but grass. They rolled very well. The rest of the course's condition was pretty good, too. It's not Augusta National, and there are times the greens are not good, but this wasn't one of them. If you play this September and probably in October, ypu'll most likely be okay with the conditions. And no, I do not work for Brown Golf or even know anyone who does.
Going, going, gone......
This course has been in decline for years now. The layout could be challenging and fun but the course is almost unplayable. The rough is too high, the greens are poor at best, the whole course is shabby and run down. It's too bad because it used to be real nice. Brown Golf needs to go. Look at the comeback of Eagles Pointe or Crescent Pointe. Maybe next year, but I wouldn't play it again this year
Not a great experience
The day started off pulling into an empty lot at 7:10, which should have been an indication to us. Apparently one of the employees was late so we got our own carts. Upon arriving at first tee we realized they had the carts setup for an outing lter that day so we took those score cards back to the proshop. Upon arrival the starter gave us a hard time like it was our issue he was late and he had to prepare 2 other carts for the outing. Apparently he didn't get the memo that we are paying customers. Greens were in horrible condition. We have played here in years past, but highly unlikely we will go back.
Lucky day for me
It’s a great course and very challenging, but I had one of those magical days and every ball seems to end up near the cup… I shot a 74 which is my best score ever!!
Good value.
Good value. For early in the year, grass needs more time on the greens but most courses seem to have experienced this
Decent
The greens need A LOT of work - not worth putting on. The staff is very nice and the clubhouse and driving range are as expected. Overall, the course is good. A tough layout, fairly maintained, and decent pace of play (though my group got stuck behind a 9-some on a Saturday for the last two holes). I traveled 40 mins from Savannah to play here and probably never will again.
Cold day to warm up round
1st day in town for the week. Winter ice has hurt the greens. People real nice, but course was beaten up during the winter.
Like putting on the beach?
A good number of greens are all sand making it difficult to judge speed & break. Add to that a couple of kids in front of you, makes for a really pleasurable afternoon!
Beautiful Disaster
Fuzzy designed a gorgeous, challenging and fair layout. Which has become a disaster due to a lack of maintenence - especially water. Been dry here, needed some watering - didn't get any. Disgusting. Fairways are like furry concrete, darn hard to keep the ball from running into trouble. It will be a long time before the low price lures back to this disappointment.
Don't go West Young Man
Island West is fast going to seed. There does not appear to be any upkeep or course maintenance any longer. Years ago this was a great place to play an affordable round, but now it is barely a playable track.
I have played this coarse before, and was not disappointed. This is a MUST play coarse .
Greens need work
Its early in the season but these greens are in winter condition at best. Nice layout though.
Just OK
Have played here other years. Greens definitely need more care. Grass is almost a grey colour and seemed almost dead. Ball rolled well though. Staff was friendly. Not as nice as other courses in the area, but price is right,, so it's a case of "pay more, get more". So if you just want to come out with some friends and have a pleasant few hours, then it's great value. But if your looking for a championship course, look elsewhere.
Hit hard by hurricane
Greens looked really bad, however they rolled pretty true and held the ball onshots. A couple of greens were pretty crusty but overall I enjoyed the course as a warm up.
Great layout, greens as reported are spotty with virtually no grass. Still a good March play.
