Sprawling across 300 acres of lush, Carolina Lowcountry, Hilton Head National Golf Club has gained a reputation as being one of the area's best public courses. The course was a collaboration between Gary Player and Bobby Weed, who each designed a nine. Weed designed the front nine with the intention of creating a complement to the Player-designed back nine rather than making them too similar. more»

You might say the Ocean Point Golf Links at Fripp Island Resort is a view with a course around it. Designed by George Cobb in the 1960s, the views have improved with more elevated tee boxes. It's not a long track, but strategy, shot placement and factoring in the wind are keys to a good round.

The Arthur Hills course at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort seems to be one of those golf courses that is always mentioned when the subject of favorite Hilton Head tracks comes up. The course is not everyone's cup of tea - it is a midget by the modern standards. But that lack of length is made up for in other ways, such as holes that test your ability to conjure options, to shape shots around trees and over creeks, lagoons and wetlands.

Forget that macho stuff. Fact is, a golf course can be women-friendly, junior-friendly and senior-friendly without sacrificing bite and bone. It's simply a matter of giving some thought to the placement of the forward tees, instead of treating them as a token gift to the lesser sex. The Jack Nicklaus-designed Golden Bear Golf Club on Hilton Head is such an example. It's a lot of fun for women (and not that bad for men, either).

Rose Hill Golf Club, which lies in Bluffton, S.C., off I-95 on your way to Hilton Head Island, doesn't have the lofty address of some of the more famous Hilton Head courses. It also doesn't have the green fees. This Gene Hamm design was meant to be player friendly and its 27 holes are just that, in varying degrees, writes National Golf Editor Tim McDonald. What’s more, green fees range from just $35-$65, depending on the season.
