The River Club started becoming a local favorite when officials made an effort to make it more playable, and particularly when they switched to bentgrass greens.
The River Club is one of the few courses in the area to feature true bentgrass, and it has become known for its outstanding greens. The semi-private course is a Tom Jackson design, with water on 15 of the 18 holes and more than 100 sand traps and bunkers.
Putting purists like it as do long hitters, who are given plenty of room off the tee. The par-5, 18th hole is one of the top-100 holes in the Grand Strand, according to the Sun News, a risk/reward hole to those who can carry the water twice for a chance at eagle.
Members initially found the plantation course too hard and stayed away, but officials filled in 10-15 bunkers in the first few years. Still, many bunkers remain and though its slope rating is only 125, average players may find it difficult, with the sprawling traps that protect most greens.
"As long as the River Club's flawless bentgrass greens are there to greet average players as they tap in for double bogeys, it's not likely they'll hear many complaints," a TravelGolf.com reviewer said.
