About

Holes 18
Type Resort
Par 72
Length 6543 yards
Slope 137
Rating 71.9

The Barony Course at Port Royal Golf Club constitutes 18 of this well-known island facility's 54 holes.

Playing to just 6,543 yards from the gold tees, Barony is a very enjoyable course for all skill levels. The back nine in particular is a fine mix of long and short holes. Like its sister courses at Port Royal, Barony begins and ends at the club's beautiful Antebellum-style clubhouse.

From the tee, many of the holes on Barony appear to be relatively open. But as you approach the green the real challenge of the course becomes clear. The greens are small and protected by deep bunkers and Bermuda rough, demanding an excellent touch with the medium and short irons. This is a course where accuracy, not length is the key factor.

Expected better

Challenging greens. Poor starter we were not able to start until 20 minutes after scheduled tee time.. No beverage cart until hole 16. Fairways were not in very good condition.

Excellent condition, especially the greens.

Numerous slow & inexperience players. We had to skip a hole only to have another foursome with more than two individuals taking multiple strokes over par. No rangers intervened.

Over all

Greens are excellent! Best I’ve played in a long time. Course conditions are good for this time of year. But pace of play was not good and ruined the whole experience. They even let a foursome of very slow players jump in front of the threesome playing in front of us which slowed it even more. Over booked! We come to Hilton Head often and have played here several times without this problem. But with the rates now, $110.00, probably would hesitate to play again. Better options available.

First time playing here

Front side was not as interesting as back.
The bunkers lack sand and care - not edged.
Greens were mostly good.
Fairways were matted and hard as rock … lacking water ?
Seems to get a lot of play maybe too much !

Nice course!

Great staff, layout and condition. Good value compared to given all the recent price hikes. Only suggestion is to add a beverage cart given the course does not return to the clubhouse at the turn. I'd play it again!

Barony - Very Small Greens

This was a very changeling course due to the number of sand traps around the greens and the size of the greens them self. Some of my approach shots were good but they found the edges of the greens and some sand traps. I was able to record 25 putts for the 18 holes played due to some great chipping and use of the putter.
Overall the course was in transition and some of the fairways were in need of some grass. Overall I would recommend this course if you want a good changeling course.

Needs more staff.

Disappointed as the pace of play was very slow.
2 groups of young men in front of us. Had to wait 5-15 min on each hole. No marshall in site to get them to speed up.
Took 4.5 hours to finish and not because of us.

Water me...

There are a lot of great things about this course, including the location, layout, pro shop staff, and clubhouse. Unfortunately, the condition of the course was really bad. We have played other courses on the island, and have not experienced this problem. This is truly a problem with Barony. They also need a marshall to assist with pace of play.
